Your Site and Search Engines

Quick checklist and links to more information on what to do and not to do when changing your website to perform better within search engines.

DO!
  • Focus on content. Make your web page content keyword-rich. (But don’t over-do it!)
  • Create a site that is easy to use in simple browsers.
  • Focus your home page on the main two or three phrases that encompass the general theme of your website.
  • Utilise your keyword phrases within the body copy on the page.
  • Link to other relevant websites.
  • If your site uses frames or a Flash introduction, ensure a developer updates the code to cater for search engine positioning. Search Engines have difficulty indexing sites with Frames and Flash elements.
  • Do pay for inclusion in the spidering search engines if you're looking for fast results, and/or have ever-changing content.
DON’T!
  • Use keywords which do not relate to the content of your page or website.
  • Repetition of keywords in your meta tags. Few search engines use meta keyword tags in their ranking formulae any more, anyway.
  • Meta redirection to a new page in less than 15 seconds - or any other "sneaky" redirection.
  • Web pages that are built primarily for the search engines and not your target audience.
  • Pages that contain hidden text and hidden links.
